Are there any kinds of gemstones which are always untreated?

Yes, many varieties of gemstones are rarely or never treated.


Why do some gems show a color change?

Some exquisite gemstones change color under different lighting sources from natural sunlight to fluorescent or different internal lights.This Optical effect gives stunning display hues of different color. Gemstones include Alexandrite, Garnets and some sapphires.


How do I determine that a sapphire has not been heated?

Unless, until the gemstone is tested by a reputed Gemological Laboratory, it is not possible to determine.

Is there a difference between brilliance and luster in gemstones?

Brilliance refers to the light reflected from the interior of a gem.Thus only a transparent gemstone can be said to have brilliance. Luster, on the other hand, refers to the light reflected from a gem's surface.


Most of your gems are graded with letters like VVS and VS. But some are not. Why is that?

The clarity grades of IF, VVS, VS, SI and I1 apply to transparent gemstones, where the interior of the stone is visible. If a gem is translucent or opaque, you can't see inclusions. So these gems are simply graded as translucent or opaque. Read more about gemstone grading.


Is there such a thing as red sapphire?

There is no such thing as red sapphire. Red corundum is always called ruby, and any other color of corundum is referred to as sapphire


What is the most durable gemstone?

Many people would answer "diamond", since it is the hardest of all the gemstone materials. But there is more to durability than just hardness.


What is "color of the streak"? Is it important?

The color of a mineral when powdered is called the streak of the mineral. Each gemstone has an inherent color, that is, its true color not affected by any impurities. Streak can be determined for any mineral by crushing it with a hammer, but it is more commonly obtained by rubbing the mineral across the hard surface.


What is "specific gravity" for gemstones? What does it measure?

What is the significance of the refractive index of a gemstone? Is a higher value better?

Refractive index, or RI, is the ratio of the velocity of light in air to the velocity of light through a transparent material. Gemstones with higher RI are generally more brilliant than those with low RI.

What is the scale used to measure the hardness of gemstones?

The Mohs Scale is used to sort the quality of gemstones, using their hardness. The score depends on whether the stone can be scratched by something harder, and what stones it can scratch. The hardest thing is Diamond and the softest is Talc.
